In 1933 the newly build Danish patrol vessel ‘Ingolf’ was equipped with two 8mm lmg and two 20mm machine cannons. On its maiden voyage the 69 meter long vessel visited a few European cities before departing for Greenland
Ingolf was part of an official promotion of trade and industry as underlined by representatives of the ‘official Denmark’ captain Godfred Hansen and vice admiral Rechnitzer. The shiny new Ingolf came to Setubal, Portugal in May 1934 with Everts as commanding officer.
The Danish company Højgaard og Schultz had just finished building the Setubal harbor. Ingolf was part of the official Danish representation at the inauguration of the harbor.
Below you see Ingolf in all its glory. The wonderful photo is from the “archive of Falster Egnshistoriske arkiv”. The little boy with his bicycle is probably admiring the two Madsen automatic guns in AA mount that are visible on deck. And, according to a knowledgeable source who was once a little boy, probably also admiring the two 20mm as well.

The 20 mm on deck cannon is mounted in a N.1 – Naval mounting (stationary) for MADSEN 20 mm gun.

Bendt Friis was part of the crew when ‘Ingolf’ visited Belgium, Portugal, Azoreres og Newfoundland in 1934, on its way to Greenland. He wrote several articles of this voyage in Danish Newspapers.
Saturday 19 May the Mayors of Setubal and a number of other guests were invited for dinner on board Ingolf. A number of Danish representatives attended the lunch. A representative of DIS was also present, lieutenant Colonel Troels-Smith was in Portugal, as it was the intention to demonstrate the Madsen machine guns for the Portuguese.
Apparently the demonstration and lunch was a success! Later that year Portugal bought several Madsen.
