Vehicle Mounting for FN-MG part II

Part II of the vehicle mounting. I will give the word to DIS when describing the workings of this mount.

Control of the guiding system

The control of the guiding system is affected through an eccentric in the main bearing of the mounting. With a view to permitting that the mounting – after having been attached to the selected supporting point – could be turned to a special transport-position, or to permitting more than one gunner position on the same vehicle, the eccentric could be released and turned to the position which will involve controlled guidance of the mounting in relation to the selected gunner position(s).

With a view to relieving the guiding devices of the mounting of undesirable strain during transport, the mounting is provided with a special ‘transport-lock’ which, firstly locks the two arms in such a manner that mutual turning is prevented and, secondly, locks the mounting in its entirety, thus preventing rotation about the fixed pivot. When the mounting is in its transport-position, the weapon could be placed on the mounting, ready for firing, and with the ammunition bag attached.

Installation of pivot bearing

The pivot bearing is fastened to the supporting structure by means of 4 screws (a). As is seen from the figures the pivot bearing as such contains no movable parts. The pivot bearing consists of the following parts:

In the figures, the vehicle is represented by a stand, in which are provided 4 holes for attachment of the pivot bearing. The right-hand edge of the stand corresponds to the front of the vehicle. The framework of the stand forms the manhole.

The locking plate (C) is detachable and could be replaced by another plate with other locking notches, corresponding to the requirements in connection with another vehicle. On a projecting arm a locking cam (f) is provided to engage the transport lock of the mounting.

If the mounting is to be used for more than one gunner position, the locking plate is provided with another notch which, like (e), shall be oriented directly towards the centre of the gunner position.
